Yesterday, a driver suspected of drunk driving drove onto a runway at the Philadelphia International Airport, causing flights at the airport to be delayed for a little over half an hour. Airport officials were concerned about the safety of people at the airport and passengers on incoming and outgoing flights, and four planes were forced to hold off on landing at the airport.
Air traffic controllers who first saw the vehicle, a Jeep, on the runway, informed one US Airways Express plane that was about to land that it could not. The plane was only about 10 to 15 seconds from touching down on the runway. Police chased the driver around the three different runways at the airport, before stopping him. The driver faces a charge of driving under the influence, among several other charges.
