July 4th and Summertime DUI Emphasis Patrols

Posted by William Kirk, Partner | Jun 22, 2014 | 0 Comments

The Washington State Patrol announced that they are stepping up drunk driving patrols starting in the beginning of July. The summertime months are notorious for drunk driving and July 4th is a holiday season that typically involves alcohol consumption. As a result, the WSP will be out in force during that time looking for suspected drunk drivers.

The WSP typically announces DUI emphasis patrols during times associated with drunk driving. For example, there are usually DUI emphasis patrols from Thanksgiving to the New Year's and also during sporting events like the Super Bowl. The WSP announces these emphasis patrols and campaigns in advance as their goal is to prevent drunk driving and not rack up as many arrests as possible. For example, the hope is that many drivers will think twice before drinking and driving if they are aware of a DUI emphasis patrol.

However, in many cases, the WSP and local law enforcement agencies may be overzealous in nabbing suspected drunk drivers. Negligent, careless, and distracted driving do not equate to drunk driving. So you may be wrongly charged with the crime even if you are sober.
