Drunk driver drives into Philadelphia International Airport

Posted on March 2nd, 2012 No Comments

Yesterday, a driver suspected of drunk driving drove onto a runway at the Philadelphia International Airport, causing flights at the airport to be delayed for a little over half an hour. Airport officials were concerned about the safety of people at the airport and passengers on incoming and outgoing flights, and four planes were forced to hold off on landing at the airport.

Air traffic controllers who first saw the vehicle, a Jeep, on the runway, informed one US Airways Express plane that was about to land that it could not. The plane was only about 10 to 15 seconds from touching down on the runway. Police chased the driver around the three different runways at the airport, before stopping him. The driver faces a charge of driving under the influence, among several other charges.

Olympia woman arrested for DUI after driving the wrong way for 18 miles

Posted on January 24th, 2012 No Comments

Pamela Drawsby, 60, of Olympia, was arrested after driving eighteen miles the wrong directions while driving under the influence.

Drawsby was found to be driving northbound at speeds up to 100 mph in her white Lincoln LS in the southbound lanes of I-5.  People driving in the southbound lanes flashed their headlights to try to stop Drawsby.  After police unsuccessfully tried to stop her by driving alongside her vehicle in the northbound lanes, spike strips were put down to flatten her tires.

When police approached her vehicle, she was confused and had “no idea what was going on.”  Though there were many close calls, no one was hurt in the incident.

Snowstorm to hit Seattle

Posted on January 18th, 2012 No Comments

Seattle is expecting a snowstorm this Wednesday after city officials spent all of Tuesday preparing for the unusual weather.

The western Washington is more accustomed to rain, the National Weather Service reported that large amounts of snow were due to hit the Seattle area and western parts of the state Wednesday.  According to Brad Colman, Weather Service meteorologist, ”Wednesday is going to be a good day to stay at home…The road is going to be treacherous.”

This could be a dangerous situation as the city has a limited amount of snowplows, and Seattle drivers are less experienced with dealing with snow and ice.

Proposed legislation for drunk drivers and sentencing

Posted on January 3rd, 2012 No Comments

Tougher legislation for drunk driving fatalities is being proposed by Washington state Rep. Christopher Hurst, D-Enumclaw, King County prosecutor Dan Satterberg, and Pierce County prosecutor Mark Lindquist.

The new legislation would increase the sentence for vehicular homicide from the current 31-41 months in prison to 78-102 months.  The new legislation sentence would match the sentence for first degree manslaughter.  Rep. Hurst states, ”I’ve seen the terrible carnage at these collision scenes and know the immeasurable suffering of surviving family members because some idiot chose to drive drunk…it’s time that we made the punishment fit the crime.”

Other additions to the new legislation for drunk drivers would include sentencing ranges affected by reckless driving or disregard for the safety of others, and vehicular assault.
