Prescription Drugs and Alcohol Consumption

Many times, prescription drugs have hazardous side effects that can be enhanced or prompted by alcohol consumption. Medications that have these consequences should be labeled with a warning against mixing them with alcohol. Despite these labels, however, some will choose to drink anyway and assume that it won’t affect them that badly. The truth of the matter is, however, that just one drink can have dramatic and even dangerous results.

Common drug side effects that can be increased with the addition of alcohol include the following:

  • Dizziness
  • Drowsiness and fatigue
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Confusion

Each of these alone can impair one’s ability to safely operate a motor vehicle. However, alongside even one drink, they can become severely inhibiting – or, in some cases, even deadly. For example, sedatives can cause complications like breathing problems or unconsciousness when combined with alcohol.

Even if you do not mix alcohol with your prescription drug, you could still be pulled over and charged with driving under the influence if your driving is inhibited by its effects. Because of this, it is extremely important for you to be able to recognize when your medication is preventing you from functioning normally.
