How Multiple DUI Offenses Can Hurt You

No one wants a DUI offense to appear on his or her criminal record. They can prevent you from receiving loans, getting job offers, and being approved for apartments. However, multiple DUI offenses can be even more damaging. With each subsequent charge, the punishment becomes more and more severe.

Your Second and Third DUI Charges

Not only will multiple DUI charges look worse on your criminal record than just one offense, but they will also carry with them more serious ramifications. The penalties for second and third DUI charges within a seven year timeframe are as follows:

  • Second Offense: up to 45 days in jail; up to 90 days Electronic Home Detention; up to a $5000 fine; license revocation for 2 to 3 years; 5 years with a probationary license; installation of an ignition interlock; probation monitoring and alcohol treatment
  • Third Offense: Up to 120 days in jail; up to 150 days Electronic Home Detention; up to a $5000 fine; license revocation for 3 to 4 years; 5 years with a probationary license; installation of an ignition interlock for up to 10 years; probation monitoring and alcohol treatment

The penalties for second and third offenses worsen with a blood alcohol content level of over 0.15% or refusal to take a breathalyzer test.
