Drinking and Riding a Bicycle

Most people are aware of the dangers associated with driving an automobile after consuming alcohol. Therefore, many times, they will choose an alternative method of transportation to get around town when they know they will be out drinking. Cabs, “pedicabs,” and designated drivers are all good options that are frequently used. Sometimes, however, party-goers choose to bicycle when intoxicated instead. This practice is actually quite dangerous, and it can be just as deadly as drunk driving.

How Alcohol Affects the Body

Alcohol can have a number of temporary but very influential physical and psychological effects on the body. Among other things, those who have enjoyed a few libations will experience the following:

  • Inability to maintain balance
  • Loss of coordination
  • Inability to make sound judgments
  • Heightened emotional state
  • Blurred vision
  • Dulled hearing
  • Disorientation

As you can see, someone who has been affected in such a manner is not fit to ride a bicycle safely around town, especially when other moving vehicles are around. Therefore, in order to protect yourself and others, it is recommended that you avoid cycling when you are under the influence of alcohol.

While intoxicated cyclists in Washington cannot be cited for drunk bicycling, they still may be subject to receiving citations or charges for other violations. For example, a drunk biker can receive tickets for breaking traffic laws or for drunk and disorderly conduct.
